Kanchi's Path to Independence: A tale of love, determination, and a flourishing milk business

Life was far from easy for Kanchi Tamang and her family, who live in Dukuchhap, Nepal. The financial strain was becoming unbearable as she tried to navigate the complexities of raising and educating her three children and choosing to now care for her sister’s baby daughter who was left alone after her parents tragically passed away when she was just 15 months old.

Despite facing financial constraints, Kanchi was determined to ensure a good life for her family and didn’t hesitate to welcome the orphaned child into her home. Her decision was fueled by an incredible loving nature and a strong desire to heal the wounds of the little girl through the warmth of a loving family, but Kanchi was aware of the financial struggles that lay ahead. When Kanchi went to collect her little niece from her house for the last time, she could see the fear and confusion on the child's face, but Kanchi knew that the little girl's wounds would gradually heal with time, love and patience that she knew she could give. She began praying for the best way forward in taking care of her larger family.

Amidst the financial hardship, a ray of hope emerged when Kanchi decided to join the family strengthening program with BSF, who she felt understood the transformative impact of empowering families and individuals. BSF worked alongside Kanchi in helping her establish her own buffalo farm business. Kanchi attended the essential business training sessions run by BSF who also supported her in providing her with three young buffaloes to begin the new business venture.

Kanchi made a clever decision to sell two of the buffaloes resulting in her making a profit, and she then combined the money from the sales with some extra funds to invest in a buffalo that could provide milk sales every day. This simple decision turned into a small but thriving milk-selling business and marked the beginning of a journey that would change not only Kanchi’s life but also the lives of those she cared for so deeply.

As Kanchi diligently milked the buffalo each day, her small business began to flourish bringing her in a steady daily income. The funds made from selling the buffalo milk not only fulfilled the family’s immediate needs but also granted Kanchi the freedom to plan. Her hard work and clever thinking transformed the modest venture into a sustainable source of income, allowing her to stand on her own feet.

She was then able to independently support her own daughter’s education, making a significant impact on her life in providing for her needs and better opportunities for her future. Kanchi has become a shining example in her community of how determination and resourcefulness can lead to positive change in even the most challenging circumstances.

With a heartfelt smile, Kanchi expresses her gratitude, saying ‘I feel incredibly blessed to be a part of the BSF program. This initiative has breathed hope into my life. Now, I can afford to support my family, educate my daughter and take good care of my niece.  I am sincerely thankful for everything.’
