Parbati's Journey: Helping Widows in their Distress

After Parbati's husband passed away, she was left in a desperate financial situation. Her daughter, Ayusha, had been sent away because the family couldn't cope. Through the support of BSF, Ayusha has now returned to the family and Parbati has received a supplementary income source to help meet the family needs.

After her husband passed away, Parbati's only source of income was working on construction sites to try to earn enough to cover the basic family necessities. During the Covid-19 pandemic, even this source of income was cut off. It became almost impossible for her to meet even the basic needs of her daughter and family. Parbati was struggling to cope and the family was now separated. Her daughter, Ayusha, had been sent away to her mother’s home in the hope she would receive better care.

Parbati desperately wanted to bring Ayusha back to her family but was worried she would not be able to provide for her needs. After Parbati joined the BSF program, she was encouraged to bring her precious daughter back to stay with her, to which she happily agreed. BSF then provided educational support for Ayusha which removed some of Parbati's financial pressures.

However, with the small amount of money Parbati earned, she still could not meet all of the family expenses. When BSF discovered that Parbati had skills and experience in raising chickens and that she wanted to start a chicken farm, they provided her with training and worked with her to develop a small business plan. The BSF project coordinator helped Parbati to build a chicken coop and bought 50 chickens, grain, and a feeder to help her get started. The chickens will supplement the family income and help Parbati to cover those family essentials that she was struggling to meet. Parbati is so thankful for the support she has received and is now determined to put a lot of effort in to growing her little chicken business in the years ahead.

Parbati gratefully said, “I was in a challenging situation and had no way to earn money for my daughter and family. But because of the BSF program, my daughter is now back with me, and a new door has opened so that I can earn extra income to support my family. I am so grateful to BSF for all the support they have provided me. I hope that through this business I will earn more money to raise my daughter well and provide for her education and needs. Thank you.”
