When the BSF team first met Puu, a 46-year-old mother from northern Thailand, she was living in a deteriorating house with her youngest son, Win, and her young grandson. At that time, her life was filled with exhaustion, disappointment, and a deep loss of self-worth. After her divorce, she had carried the full responsibility of raising her children on her own, facing each day with little support and growing uncertainty about the future.

The pain of the past had slowly eroded her confidence—not only as a woman, but also as a mother. Her neglected home reflected the quiet battles within her. With no stable income, she took whatever work she could find—caring for others’ buffalo some days and collecting recyclable waste on others—simply surviving one day at a time.
In the eyes of many in the community, Puu’s life seemed unlikely to change. No one had ever stepped in to offer her a real opportunity, and few believed she could rebuild her future.
The Beginning of Change
When Puu joined the program at BSF, it was not simply about receiving assistance. It was about receiving an opportunity she had never had before.
Through regular training on parenting, hygiene, health, and life planning, her perspective slowly began to change. The team did more than teach; they walked alongside her, listened, and reminded her of her value as a mother. What once felt like enough—simply providing food each day—grew into a deeper desire to build a better future for her son.
She started spending more time with her kids. She began preparing them for school every day. She became more engaged in their education and future. Win also received educational support, including school uniforms and learning materials, helping him attend school consistently.
Unlocking Potential Through Opportunity
To strengthen her livelihood, Puu requested and received from BSF a much-needed motorbike sidecar fitted with comfortable seating and a weighing scale. This simple yet strategic investment enabled her to expand her recycling business and generate additional income by offering a daily mini-taxi service for children in the surrounding area, transporting them to and from school.
Puu also participated in BSF training on money management and small business budgeting. Through this, she gained practical knowledge and new understanding to help her manage and grow her income more effectively. She was deeply grateful for the opportunity.
What followed exceeded many expectations. From an unstable and unpredictable income, Puu's earnings increased significantly to an average of 300 Baht per day. With the increased carrying capacity, she could now collect and sell more recyclables during the day, while also serving local families and the community through her new school transport service each morning and afternoon.
While 300 Baht a day may seem modest to some, for Puu it marked a profound turning point. It meant stability. It meant consistency. It meant the ability to plan for her family’s future. The sidecar became more than a practical tool—it became a symbol of trust and belief. Someone believed in her ability to rise again. Her life, once defined by uncertainty, now carries rhythm, purpose, and renewed hope.
Visible Transformation
Puu’s home is now cleaner and more organized. She takes better care of her health and hygiene. She encourages her son and plans for their future together. The most visible change is in her eyes. Where there were once emptiness and despair, there is now confidence and determination. She has started saving money. She values herself again. She believes she can build a better future for her family.

With a warm smile, she shared, “I am very happy to be part of this program. This is an opportunity I will never forget. Before, I only thought about earning enough to eat each day. But today, my life has truly changed. Thank you so much.”
Why Strengthening Families Matters
Puu’s story reminds us that sustainable change does not begin with giving things. It begins with restoring dignity, hope, and self-worth. When a mother stands strong again, a child gains the opportunity to grow in stability, and the whole community becomes stronger.
Puu was once someone few believed would change.
Today, she is living proof that when the right opportunity is given, vulnerability can be transformed into resilience. This is why strengthening families continues to matter—because every family deserves the chance to hope again.
